In the Arctic, global warming is occurring two to four times faster than elsewhere in the world. Polar bear populations, especially in the southern and western Hudson Bay, are therefore on the front lines of climate change and are steadily declining. In this region, the bear population has plummeted from 842 individuals in 2016 to 618 in 2022. If the temperature rises above 2 degrees Celsius, these iconic animals of the North Pole will likely not survive.
The polar bear is not only essential to the cultural life, nutrition, and finances of Indigenous peoples, but it is also an indicator of the health of the Arctic ecosystem due to its position at the top of the food chain.
For me, without wishing to diminish its formidable predatory nature, it is true that its "teddy bear" appearance, its fluffy fur, its gentle eyes, and its cute muzzle help to melt my heart. I then imagine myself as a polar bear and I find myself on the ice or the land, under the too hot sun, surrounded by plants that are more tropical than arctic, or I am simply wandering around the city center.

Les populations d’ours polaires, surtout dans le sud et l’ouest de la baie d’Hudson, sont donc aux premières loges des changements climatiques et déclinent sans cesse. Dans cette région, les ours se sont vus passer de 842 individus en 2016 à 618 en 2022. Si la température augmente au-delà de 2 degrés Celsius, ces animaux emblématiques du Pôle Nord ne survivront probablement pas.
L’ours polaire est non seulement essentiel pour la vie culturelle, la nutrition et les finances des peuples autochtones, mais il est également un indicateur de la santé de l’écosystème arctique par sa position au sommet de la chaîne alimentaire.
Pour moi, sans vouloir lui enlever son tempérament de prédateur redoutable, il est vrai que son apparence «nounours», son poil duveteux, ses yeux tendres et son joli museau aident à attendrir mon cœur. J’imagine alors être un ours polaire et je me retrouve sur la glace ou la terre, sous le soleil trop chaud, entouré de plantes plus tropicales qu’arctiques, ou carrément je déambule au centre-ville.
